Exercise is one of the best things you can do to promote overall health and wellness. Regular workouts are great for cardiovascular health and bone and muscle strength. But while exercise is an effective way to manage your weight, it cannot realistically spot-reduce specific areas of your body — including oversized breasts.
Despite workout plans that claim to shrink large, heavy breasts, exercise will not dramatically change breast size or shape. Dr. Robert Galiano explains why here.
Exercise’s Limited Effect on Breast Size
To understand why exercise has a negligible effect on breast size, it helps to understand the composition of the breasts. Breasts are made up of fatty and glandular tissue. Exercise shrinks fat cells, including fat cells in the breasts, but it cannot reduce glandular tissue.
Even as exercise shrinks fat cells, it is nearly impossible to know for sure how your breasts will change with exercise. The results may be so minimal that they are hardly noticeable. There are no exercises that specifically target only breast fat.
Another problem with exercising to reduce breast size is that many women with oversized breasts find it difficult to perform high-impact cardio exercise like running, riding a bicycle or performing high-intensity interval training (HIIT). The mass and weight of large breasts can cause pain or impede normal range of motion.
A Safe, Predictable Way to Reduce Oversized Breasts
If you want to make dramatic, lasting changes to your natural breast size, surgical breast reduction is your best choice.
During breast reduction, Dr. Galiano removes glandular and fatty tissue from the breasts. He then re-drapes the breast skin smoothly over the remaining tissue. If the nipples and areolas are too large in proportion to the breasts, Dr. Galiano can resize them so they are more aesthetically pleasing.
The breast reduction procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes a few hours. Anesthesia is used to prevent discomfort during surgery. Some patients elect to combine breast reduction with other plastic surgery procedures, such as liposuction or tummy tuck, for a more transformative result.
In addition to creating a more attractive, proportional breast size, breast reduction can make exercise and physical activities more enjoyable. Smaller, lighter breasts will not get in your way of going for a jog or hike or hopping on your Peloton bike.
