Breast Implants in Chicago
Breast augmentation increases the size and fullness of the breasts with the placement of saline or silicone implants. If you have always had breasts that were smaller than you would like, or you noticed a change in your breast size or fullness due to age, pregnancy, nursing or weight loss, breast augmentation might be a great solution to help you achieve a more voluptuous bust.
Dr. Robert Galiano’s goal is not just to create larger breasts – it is to create breasts that look beautiful and proportional to your body. He understands that your physique and anatomy are unlike anyone else’s, and that you need a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. Dr. Galiano prides himself on being able to utilize different techniques in order to help you get the breasts you have always dreamed of.
Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you are at least 18 years old, in good health and do not smoke. If you are interested in having breast implants placed, Dr. Galiano welcomes you to schedule a consultation at his practice to discuss your options.
Making Decisions about Your Breast Implants
Implant Type: Breast implants are filled with either a saline or a silicone material. Both types are approved by the FDA and considered very safe. They each have their pros and cons, which Dr. Galiano will discuss with you in person.
Implant Shape: Breast implants come in round and teardrop shapes. Round implants have equal projection on top and bottom, whereas teardrop implants are slightly sloped to mimic a more anatomically correct breast shape.
Implant Size: Implants are measured by cubic centimeters rather than cup size. They range from about 100 cc to 800 cc.
After learning more about your treatment goals and examining your body type/frame, Dr. Galiano can recommend a suitable surgical plan (including breast implant type and sizing).
Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis under anesthesia.
Dr. Galiano can place implants through one of several incision locations: underneath the breast in the crease where the breast meets the torso (i.e., inframammary fold), around the areola or in the armpit. By placing the incisions in the natural creases and transitions of the skin, any scarring is inconspicuous.
After creating the breast augmentation incisions, Dr. Galiano can place implants either in front of or behind the chest muscle. Each approach has its own set of pros and cons. Dr. Galiano will help you decide on the right fit for your needs during your preoperative consultation.
Recovering from Breast Augmentation
Your breasts will be swollen, bruised and somewhat firm immediately after surgery. These side effects should subside within a few weeks. You can take medication prescribed by Dr. Galiano for any discomfort.
Thanks to Dr. Galiano’s advanced surgical techniques, most patients are able to resume work and socializing within a few days of surgery. He will monitor your recovery progress closely and advise when you can resume your workout routine and other activities.
Breast Augmentation FAQs
What are my options for increasing size and adding proportion to my breasts?
Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Galiano uses two types of implants to add volume and aesthetic appeal to breasts: saline and silicone gel. The silicone filler may be a traditional cohesive gel or the newer “gummy bear” variety that has a natural, supple feel. Each type of filler is securely contained within a silicone shell. Implants come in a range of sizes and shapes, allowing patients to select a round shape or teardrop variety that features greater fullness at the base of the breast. The key to choosing the best implant for your body type and expectations is to share your goals with Dr. Galiano, ask plenty of questions, review his before-and-after albums, and visualize in your mind or with the assistance of computer modeling and practice bras how you will look after breast augmentation.
Can I avoid or minimize scarring?
Breast augmentation requires the surgeon to make incisions, so some scarring is inevitable. Innovative new techniques help minimize permanent marks, however. In a transumbilical breast augmentation procedure, implants are inserted via the belly button; a transaxillary technique begins with incisions that are made under the armpits. Using these locations minimizes noticeable scarring. In an inframammary procedure, the incision is made under the breasts; a periareolar procedure locates the incision around the nipple. Whichever type of incision is made, you will notice significant fading of any scars in less than a year.
What should I expect with recovery?
Breast augmentation is major surgery, and that means your body will need time and space to fully recover. During the first two days of your recovery, you will experience significant swelling. It will actually take several months for all of the swelling to disappear. You can also expect to feel pain and soreness, especially if your implant has been inserted beneath chest muscles.
When you arrive home from your outpatient procedure, you will be wearing a surgical bra to provide firm support as your breasts heal. You may also need tubes to drain blood or other fluids that may pool at the site of incisions. After a week, the tubes will be removed and you will wear a less restrictive support bra. Although you will probably feel well enough to return to work or school at this point, you will need to avoid any physical activity that can put stress on your chest muscles, and should continue to sleep on your back.
How will the feel and firmness of my breasts change?
Many patients report the most natural feel with silicone gel implants. With saline implants, a similar consistency can often be achieved by overfilling the shell and implanting it behind the chest muscle. You will notice new strength and firmness in your breasts as a result of the surgery, and this will help them resist sagging, depending on the size you choose.
