Tummy Tuck FAQs
Is a tummy tuck right for me?
Abdominoplasty, also known as “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure that targets loose skin and weakened muscles that may have developed in the abdominal area as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or simply the passage of time.
Women often choose abdominoplasty as a way to restore tone to stomach muscles that weakened or separated during pregnancy. Patients who have lost significant weight and now notice loose folds on the belly because of reduced skin elasticity are also good candidates for the procedure.
However, tummy tuck is not a recommended strategy for losing weight. In fact, tummy tuck patients should be as close to their ideal weight as possible.
What should I expect during the procedure?
The first step in the surgical procedure is to administer general anesthesia. Next, Dr. Galiano makes an incision in the lower abdomen and separates skin from tissue, suctioning out some of the fat, reconstructing the abdominal wall and tightening the muscles. He will also pull the skin tight and remove the excess amount. The final step is to suture the incision and place bandages over the area.
Are there other options?
A tummy tuck is a popular choice for many women and some men, but there are other options to explore, depending on the distribution of fat in the stomach and the condition of the abdominal muscles.
When creating a more natural-looking body shape requires the removal of fat in specific areas, Dr. Galiano may recommend liposuction, as a standalone procedure or in combination with a tummy tuck. The combined procedure is known as lipoabdominoplasty. This technique has the added benefit of giving the surgeon increased flexibility in shaping the abdomen and surrounding areas. It is an option for patients who have been unable to reduce their weight sufficiently to allow for a successful abdominoplasty.
For patients whose fat and folds of skin are located mostly below the belly button, a partial abdominoplasty, or “mini tummy tuck,” may be the best choice.
Sometimes a tummy tuck is done as part of a “mommy makeover” that can include a breast lift and/or breast augmentation.
What is the recovery period like?
As a skilled Chicago plastic surgeon, Dr. Galiano usually performs most abdominoplasty procedures on an outpatient basis. Extensive tummy tucks may require an overnight stay.
Make sure to set aside plenty of time and space for the recovery period. A tummy tuck is major surgery, and you may not feel ready to resume your normal routine for up to two months. Many patients return to work in two to three weeks, however.
Pain is a short-term aspect of the recovery process, and swelling is a long-term feature. During the procedure, Dr. Galiano applies a long-lasting anesthetic that will continue to suppress pain for up to three days.
Efficient healing requires that you wear a compression garment and be careful not to strain your abdomen. You should be able to walk around and do mild activities within a day or two. Walking will improve circulation and help prevent blood clots.
Will I have scars?
Because a tummy tuck requires a large incision in the lower abdomen, scars are unavoidable. As an experienced Chicago plastic surgeon, Dr. Galiano is careful to make the incision in the least noticeable area, usually right above the pubic hairline, where it can be concealed beneath a bathing suit or pair of underwear
An incision is also made near the belly button. This allows the surgeon to properly position the belly button after excess skin is removed. This can be a “U-shaped” or circular scar, depending on patient preference. The scarring should blend into the natural contours of the belly button.
If scarring is a concern and your skin is relatively tight, you may be a candidate for mini-abdominoplasty, which produces a scar about the length of a C-section incision. However, most patients require a full tummy tuck to achieve optimal results.
If there are large folds of skin, however, a longer scar is inevitable. Fortunately, scars improve in appearance in the months following surgery.
Be sure to discuss any concerns about scarring with your surgeon as you plan your procedure. Dr. Galiano will work closely with you to honor your preferences and achieve the look you want, while helping you understand all of your options.
Will a tummy tuck eliminate stretch marks?
If your stretch marks are located in the lower abdomen, a tummy tuck will reduce or eliminate them. That’s because some of the skin itself is surgically removed. Stretch marks on other parts of the body not involved in the abdominoplasty will not change, however.
How soon after a C-section can I have a tummy tuck?
Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Galiano recommends waiting about three months after a Caesarean delivery for women who are not nursing. This allows time for the uterus to regain its normal size and shape. Moms who are breastfeeding should postpone surgery until they have weaned their babies.
Will a pregnancy reverse the results of a tummy tuck?
Yes, and that’s why Dr. Galiano recommends that women wait until the final pregnancy before doing the procedure. Pregnancy puts a great deal of strain on the abdomen, and muscles that have been repaired in an abdominoplasty may once again separate. Similarly, patients who gain substantial weight in the future may see a recurrence of the issues that led them to choose a tummy tuck. Barring future pregnancies and dramatic weight gain, your tummy tuck should not need to be repeated to maintain the smooth and fit profile you have achieved.
Are there other benefits of a tummy tuck?
In addition to the increased self-confidence and satisfaction you’ll gain, there may be other positive side effects. Recent studies have suggested some surprising benefits. A tummy tuck appears to reduce the incidence of stress urinary incontinence and also improves some types of hernias. A tighter abdomen also seems to be associated with better posture and even effective weight management.
