What Is Liposuction Recovery Like?

Liposuction in Chicago

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits and sculpt your body into a more contoured shape. While the procedure delivers effective fat reduction, recovery plays a crucial role in achieving optimal results. Dr. Robert Galiano, a board-certified plastic surgeon, provides personalized post-operative care to help patients heal smoothly and enjoy long-lasting results

What to Expect Immediately After Surgery

Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. Since general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is used, it’s necessary to arrange for someone to drive you home.

In the first 24 to 48 hours, swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are expected. Small incisions are made during the procedure to insert the cannula (a thin tube used to remove fat), and fluid drainage from these incisions is normal. Dr. Galiano provides a compression garment, which must be worn continuously for the first few weeks to reduce swelling, promote skin contraction, and help the body adjust to its new contours.

Pain is usually mild to moderate and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers. Some patients compare this soreness to muscle fatigue after a strenuous workout.

The First Few Weeks of Recovery

  • Swelling and Bruising: Bruising begins to fade within two weeks, while swelling gradually subsides over several weeks. However, some residual swelling may persist for up to three to six months.
  • Activity Restrictions: You are encouraged to take short walks as soon as you feel comfortable, since light movement helps prevent blood clots. However, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks.
  • Returning to Work: You may be able to return to a desk job after a week or so, depending on the extent of liposuction and the area treated. However, you may need additional time off if you have a physically demanding job.

Long-Term Recovery and Final Results

Most of the swelling has resolved by the three-month mark, and you should notice more defined body contours. The final results of liposuction become fully visible around six months as the body fully adapts to its new shape.

While liposuction removes fat cells permanently, maintaining a stable weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise is essential to preserving the results.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

  • Follow Dr. Galiano’s post-op instructions carefully to minimize complications and maximize results.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a nutrient-rich diet to support tissue healing.
  • Wear compression garments as directed to help control swelling and enhance body contouring.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol as they can slow down recovery and impair healing.
  • Be patient with your results—swelling takes time to resolve, and the final outcome improves gradually.

Dr. Galiano is dedicated to providing expert guidance throughout the recovery process to ensure a smooth healing journey. If you are considering liposuction and want to learn more, contact our office in Chicago at 312-926-4382.
