Preparing for the Day of Surgery

Plastic surgery

Exactly how a patient prepares for plastic surgery depends on the type of procedure being performed. For example, preparing for liposuction is quite different than preparing for a tummy tuck. Top Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Galiano focuses not only on physical preparedness, but on the all-important mental outlook.

Physical Preparation

The surgeon provides you with a list of things you should and should not do in the weeks before your operation. This may include medication changes, stopping the use of aspirin and other potential blood thinners, and perhaps some dietary modifications. Of course, anyone undergoing surgery should not smoke. Get lots of sleep and cut back or stop drinking alcohol.

Mental Preparation

Just as critical is mental preparation prior to surgery. In the weeks before the procedure, take care of yourself, and that includes getting regular exercise and consuming a healthy diet. While this is also part of physical preparation, knowing that you are in the best shape possible helps you deal with any pre-surgery jitters.

From the beginning, a realistic approach to the surgery is vital. It can take a long time to heal with certain procedures, so you are not going to know the final result right away. Make sure you are comfortable with that. You should also ensure that your expectations are realistic, a subject you should talk about with your surgeon beforehand.

Do your research and find out as much as you can about the surgery. Ask questions — there is no such thing as a silly question, especially when it concerns your body. Knowing what to expect is a key factor in mental preparedness prior to an operation.

Preparing for Recovery

Some plastic surgery procedures, such as liposuction, do not require much in the way of recovery preparation, since patients are generally back to normal within a day or two. Other procedures are major surgery, and a great deal of preparation is necessary beforehand for your recuperation period.

If you have children or pets, arrange for someone to care for them while you are recovering. The same holds true for a caretaker for yourself, if necessary. Get as much done as possible prior to the day of surgery, such as having prepared meals on hand, all shopping done as well as installing a hospital bed if you will need one.
