Facelift Recovery Tips

Facelift surgery in Chicago

Preparing for facelift surgery is an exciting time. In between moments of daydreaming about your results and making logistical arrangements, you may be curious about what your recovery is going to be like. Chicago facelift surgeon Robert Galiano is here to answer your questions and provide tips for a smooth, complication-free recovery.

Plan for rest and relaxation

Your number one priority immediately following facelift is to rest and relax. Your body needs time to recuperate, and it is important that you not overexert yourself during recovery. Doing so could prolong the recovery process and increase the risk of complications.

Prior to surgery, make arrangements so that the majority of your normal tasks are taken care of. Line up care for children, grandchildren, pets and/or elderly parents who depend on you. Stock your fridge and freezer with easy-to-prepare meals and snacks. Have plenty of clean laundry on hand. Coordinating these responsibilities ahead of time will allow you to concentrate on resting after surgery.

Keep your head elevated

Swelling is a common aftereffect of facelift, and usually nothing to be concerned about. It tends to peak two to three days after surgery and then slowly resolve. Keeping your head elevated for a few weeks, including while you rest and sleep, will help manage post-operative swelling. Many of our patients choose to sleep in a recliner or use several pillows to prop themselves up. Dr. Galiano also recommends you avoid bending over or lifting anything heavy to keep swelling to a minimum.

Practice smart incision care

Dr. Galiano and our team will give you complete instructions for caring for your incisions. Keep your incisions clean and dry. Do not pick or peel at your incisions or scabs, or apply any products that are not approved by Dr. Galiano. Also, be patient with your scarring — although you will see an initial improvement after several months, it can take up to a year or more for the scars to completely flatten and fade.

Nourish your body with the right nutrition

Your body needs fuel as it recovers from the facelift operation. Try to nourish it with healthy foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, including plenty of fresh produce and lean protein. Avoid sodium-heavy foods, which can increase swelling. Fiber is important, as some pain medications can cause constipation. Also, stay well-hydrated by drinking lots of water. Hydration will help remove toxins from your body and promote fresh, supple-looking skin.
