Brow Lift vs. Botox

Brow lift vs. Botox

As people age, fine lines and wrinkles form on the face, and the skin loses elasticity and starts to sag.

Signs of aging can be especially apparent around a person’s eyes. These changes are normal and to be expected, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be reversed.

People who want to restore a more youthful appearance to the area around the eyes have options: brow lift and Botox, both of which have pros and cons.

To learn more about what a brow lift and Botox can and can’t do, keep reading below, as top Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Galiano discusses each treatment option in detail.

Brow Lift

A brow lift is a surgical procedure that addresses signs of aging in the upper region of the face, such as frown lines, sagging eyebrows and deep forehead wrinkles.

Brow lift works by raising the skin of the brow and forehead to create a tighter, smoother appearance.

The brow lift procedure usually takes around one to two hours to complete, and patients can expect to see results six months post-surgery when the treated area has had sufficient time to heal.

Here are some of the benefits of a brow lift:
• Longer-lasting results – Brow lift results generally last several years, and sometimes more than a decade.
• More dramatic results – A brow lift is effective at addressing deeper, more severe wrinkles.

There are risks involved with a brow lift, however. These include permanent scalp numbness, asymmetrical brow positioning, hair loss at the incision site, visible scarring and infection.

Recovery from a brow lift can take several weeks and a small tube may need to be placed at the incision site for drainage purposes. Patients may also experience side effects, such as swelling, bruising, itching, and numbness.

Patients should consult with their doctors about when they can resume work and other normal activities.

Botox

Botox is another way to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases. Botox is non-surgical and works by injecting an FDA-approved toxin into the face that prevents the muscles from contracting and thus causes facial lines to diminish.

Unlike a brow lift, the Botox procedure takes only a few minutes to complete, and patients experience minimal discomfort. There is no recovery period with Botox, and results typically show within three to seven days.

Botox results don’t last nearly as long as brow lift results, though. Botox results generally last four to six months. But after having Botox, facial lines and creases generally appear less severe when they return.
